|About The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor|
The Hideaway is a small, relaxed and friendly campsite in the heart of North Yorkshire, that offers you chilled out camping and glamping that's in-tune with nature and doesn't cost the Earth. There are just 40 pitches in a 6 acre field, which nestles in the midst of our 110 acre farm, surrounded by trees and bounded on one side by a stream. It is off the beaten track, but only a stroll from the village of Husthwaite.
You will love it here if you appreciate listening to nature and "eco-camping" off the beaten track, if you want to toast marshmallows on an open campfire whilst gazing at a sky laden with stars, or you want time to yourself to read your favourite book or watch the Kingfishers and the Otters down by the stream and if you appreciate open spaces to play and make new friends whilst sitting around your campfire.
The Hideaway@Baxby is a special, peaceful and restful place where you can spend precious days away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A haven for walkers and cyclists, and a perfect base for exploring the many historic, cultural and outdoor attractions of this lovely part of North Yorkshire.
We are about camping, campfires, the countryside and getting away from it all. We believe and encourage 'natural play' (playing in the stream, climbing trees and being free to run around making new friends) here at The Hideaway so you won't find a man-made children's play area here, however there is a play park in the village, a short walk from the campsite.
A proportion of the fee you pay to stay at The Hideaway goes towards creating and maintaining wildlife habitats here at Baxby manor!
The Sanctuary is A CHILD-FREE area of The Hideaway away from the main site. These pitches beyond the orchard back on to the stream and are set amongst the native trees and grasses; a special place that has been untouched to encourage wildlife and ground-nesting birds. For this reason there are only five pitches for tents (no hook-ups) and no dogs are permitted. Otters and Kingfishers have been spotted from these pitches!
Here at The Hideaway we like to go the extra mile for you so when you feel like something a little different or just don't fancy packing up the car with that wet tent at the end of your holiday why not book yourself into one of our cosy Ecopods or one of our cute Hobbit Houses!
We have two Double Ecopods (sleeps 2, one of which is doggy-friendly) and one Family Ecopod (sleeps 2+2). Unlike most 'Pods' ours have proper beds in them - and mattresses! The Doubles have a double bed for two whereas the Family Ecopod has a double bed AND a bunk bed and a single bed for the kids. The singles are only suitable for kids though, they are not large enough for adults, (2ft wide).
There is no electricity in the Ecopods because that just wouldn't be 'eco-glamping, with soul' now would it! There are lanterns for tea lights though so you can sit outside and gaze at the stars! You will need to bring your own bedding (sheet,duvet/sleeping bag and pillows) and perhaps some chairs for sitting around the campfire and toasting marshmallo. We also recommend you bring some slippers or similar footwear for inside the Ecopods as we ask that no outdoor shoes are worn inside. (Keeps the wooden floor looking nice!)
Campfire cooking only, there's no cooking facilities inside so bring a camping stove with you so you don't have to crank up the fire in the morning for that bacon sarnie! Each Ecopod has its own fire-pit.
One dog allowed in one of our Ecopods (DP2)
Alternatively, Rufus's Roost is no ordinary Treehouse. It really is something special, appealing to that inner child in all of us! Perched on a hillside in woodland belonging to the 14th Century medieval Baxby Manor access to Rufus's Roost is through the forest on a raised board-walk!
Between the two turrets there is a large veranda for alfresco dining complete with a log-fired pizza oven and a log-fired hot-tub! For the cold dark winter months there is a "Den" complete with bean bags, comfy cushions, TV, games console, movies and popcorn machine, accessed via slide! Oh, and did I mention the log-fired hot tub on the verandah looking out towards the North Yorkshire Moors........?
However we'd much prefer it if you went outside and embraced the Great Outdoors and discovered what it has to offer - so inside Rufus's Roost you'll find binoculars and a bat monitoring station! We would love it too if you let us know what animals you spot whilst here so we have created a 'Beasts, Birds, and Bugs' log for you to write in.
A travel cot, highchair, sterilising equipment and a milk and food warmer are all provided for your little munchkins! Sleeps up to six in two doubles bedrooms on the ground floor plus a double/single bunk on the mezzanine above. All bedding and towels are provided so you just need to bring yourselves plus food and drink!
We are very eco-conscious here at Baxby Manor which is why the heating and hot water is via an Air Source Heat Pump, all lighting is LED and all our products are eco-friendly. You can rest assured that your impact upon OUR environment whilst staying at Rufus's Roost will be minimal, and we're always looking at ways to make it even less! We do not accept one-night bookings, and definitely no dogs (really not suitable for dogs!)
We can also provide you with the perfect venue for your Big Day; be it a marquee amongst the wild flowers or giant Teepes in the vintage apple Orchard! When it comes to your Big Day there is just SO much to organise; from Aisle runners to Videographers and Vows to Accommodation!
Here at The Hideaway you effectively have a 'blank canvas'; you can do as much or as little as you want and leave the rest to us!
Preserving the environment here at Baxby Manor is important to us, which is why when you come to stay at The Hideaway things may be a little different from most 'standard' campsites.
Our family has been involved in farming since my great great Grandfather arrived here many moons ago, but unlike many farmers who over the years have ripped out hedges and trees to make way for crops we have planted them!
In the last 20 years we have planted over 25 acres of woodland, have carried out extensive conservation work on the hedgerows and are recognised for our large numbers of small bird and wildflower species. Having something to show to and share with future generations is really important to us.
For these reasons when we built The Hideaway in 2012 we installed a biomass boiler to heat the water for your showers and installed a Heat Recovery Ventilation system to make sure nothing goes to waste! Caring for the environment should also include the avoidance of light pollution, so the outside lighting at The Hideaway is minimal and uses LED's.
Our electricity is 100% Green and supplied by Bristol Energy, a Community Initiative who profits are fed back into local communities. You will see that we use LED and solar lights only around the campsite. We are pretty confident that we have perfected all of our 'green' systems here at The Hideaway because when you are on holiday we know comfort means everything and don't want to jeopardise this, there's nothing worse than a cold shower!
Our waste is collected by Yorwaste who aim to reduce their waste to landfill to 0%.
We encourage you to climb the trees and play in the stream! Connect with nature - Disconnect from everything else!
